The Ulysses Project

Artist Statement:

Ulysses is a novel by Irish writer James Joyce  and was first published in 1922.  The novel chronicles the various appointments, wanderings, and encounters of its main protagonist, Leopold Bloom, in Dublin  over the course of an ordinary day. Specifically, June 16th of 1904. Ulysses is the Latinized  name of Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. Every episode (chapter) of Ulysses has a theme, unique literary technique, and correspondence between its characters and those of The Odyssey, as the novel establishes a series of parallels between its characters and events and those of the poem.

Ulysses is considered one of the greatest literary works of all time. In 1998, publishing company Modern Library ranked Ulysses first on its list of the 100 best English language novels of the 20th century.

For The Ulysses Project, I created an image for each of the 18 episodes of the novel.  The images are 12”x 12” linocut relief prints, printed in a limited edition of six.

Below are selected images from The Ulysses Project. All images are 12″ x 12″ linocut relief prints completed in 2013.
